The Calm Paws Guardianship Program

Guardians and Guardian Dogs –
Roles & Responsibilities Explained
Whenever one of my dogs has a litter of puppies, I take a female or male puppy from the litter, for the purpose of breeding with that puppy when he/she is between 12 and 18 months old.
When these puppies are 10 weeks old, I look for responsible people/families who will provide a loving, caring home for them. These people/families will then become the Guardians for these dogs which is why these dogs are called Guardian Dogs.
For female Guardian Dogs, I will maintain the breeding rights to the dog for up to 3 litters. After this time, usually when the dog is between 2 and 3 years of age, the Guardian may have the dog desexed and the dog is no longer deemed a Guardian Dog. The Guardian then becomes the sole owner of the dog.
For male Guardian Dogs, from time to time he will be required to return to me, usually for a few days, for the purpose of mating him with a female dog of my choosing. He will remain a Guardian Dog for up to 5 years of age.
During the first 6 months of homing the Guardian Dog, he/she has to be returned to me periodically so as he/she may go to a Vet of my choosing for health-related tests and vaccinations. Should the dog not pass her/his tests, then I will not breed with her/him. The Guardian may then have her/him desexed and she/he will no longer be a Guardian Dog and the Guardian becomes the sole owner of the dog.
What it involves to have a Guardian Dog
A perfect Guardian for me is someone who is willing to take a puppy and provide a safe, healthy and loving environment for it. A Guardian is a person who is willing to work with me and the Calmpaws family towards developing the physical, mental and emotional well-being of the dog.
I will commence training the puppy during his/her first 10 weeks. At this time he/she will go to the Guardian who I will then catch up with regularly to guide and support the training of the puppy. Together we will work towards ensuring the development and welfare of the puppy. Should the puppy need boarding at any time, she/he will come back to me.
I strongly believe that a Guardianshoud be in partnership with me to work towards ensuring the puppy realises her/his full personality and potential. For any behavioural/emotional/health that may arise, I will provide guidance and support to ensure the puppy feels safe and secure and fully supported.
Due to this on-going training and support, it is preferred that a Guardian should reside in the Gold Coast/Brisbane/Northern New South Wales area.
